THE STORY: A chilling and mystifying study in mounting terror in which a small group of “psychically receptive” people are brought together in Hill House, a brooding, mid-Victorian mansion known as a place of evil and “contained ill will.” Led by the learned Dr. Montague, who is conducting research in supernatural phenomena, the visitors have come to probe the secrets of the old house and to draw forth the mysterious powers that it is alleged to possess—powers which have brought madness and death to those who have lived therein in the past.
Dr. John Montague (Male, 40+): Researcher and writer on Parapsychology, an investigator of the supernatural who has brought everyone together to investigate the supernatural happenings of Hill House.
Eleanor Vance (Female, 25-40): A friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists, who resents having lived as a recluse caring for her demanding invalid mother.
Theodora (Female, 25-40): An impulsive, extroverted, bohemian artist. A modern psychic, who is independent, carefree and the opposite of Eleanor.
Luke Sanderson (Male, 25-40): The charismatic young heir to Hill House. Slightly-skeptical, playboy type, yet happily bonds with the other three members of the psychic group.
Mrs. Dudley (Female, 40+): The caretaker of Hill House, blunt and single-minded, and about as welcoming as the house itself.
Mrs. Montague (Female, 40+): Wife of Dr. Montague, she is an enthusiast of the paranormal, more the spiritualist than the scientist.
Arthur (Male, Any Age): Friend/Assistant to Mrs. Montague. When he is not helping Mrs. Montague commune with the spirits, he is the headmaster at a boarding school. (May possibly be played with an accent).
